The effect of position on ventilatory function among upper abdominal surgery patients

Abstract
Ventilatory function was measured with three different positions-supine, left lateral and sitting position-at various times.
Ten male and eight female patients who were admitted for elective abdominal surgery under general anesthesia were the subjects of the study.
Those patients with cardiopulmonary problems, obesity and smoking habit were excluded from the study.
The study was conducted from March 15 to April 30, 1985 in Seoul National University Hospital.
The patient¢¥s ventilatory function - tidal volume, forced vital capacity, minute ventilation and respiratory rate were measured with Wright- spirometer according to various positions at preoperatively, 12 hours postoperatively and 36 hours. postoperatively.
The results are as following:
1. At preoperatively, patients revealed the best pulmonary ventilatory function at sitting position.
2. At 12 hours postoperatively, the sitting position resulted in best pulmonary ventilatory function. Especially the forced vital capacity exhibited significant difference among positions at 10% of probability level.
3. At 36 hours postoperatively, pulmonary ventilatory function was the best in, sitting position.
4. Pulmonary venilatory function was significantly different according to the time of measurement.
